It's been awhile since I've posted, partly because of holidays... and partly because of a lack of inspiration. Well, today's inspiration comes in the form of a great new CD, and now that I have a chance to do this, I want to review the newest Legacy Five release. Legacy Five is Lee Black (tenor), Scott Fowler (lead), Bryan Walker (baritone), Matt Fouch (bass) and Josh Townsend (piano).
What A Day- NOT "What A Day That Will Be." This one is a new, fast song, but like the classic song, it's also about the day when we go to heaven. Listen fast, though, because there are a lot of words! Scott is featured.
What Kind of Man- This one is an interesting look at the day of Jesus' crucifixion. Each verse features a different band member and is written from the perspective of a man who, looking back on that day, must have been amazed at Jesus' love in spite of what they'd done. The first verse is from the perspective of Barabbas and is sung by Bryan, the second verse is from the perspective of Thomas and is sung by Scott, and the third verse is from the perspective of Peter and is sung by Lee. After the bridge comes the application to our lives, since none of us really deserve to be forgiven or loved. Definitely a standout.
That's What Makes Believers Believe- This song is about the little things that prove God exists. It features the whole group on the first verse and Scott on the second. This one is a nice pullback from the fast tempo of track 1 and the volume of track 2... not that those things are problems!
Love, Pure Love- The title track, this one features Lee and tells the story of the woman who anointed Jesus with perfume and was judged by the Pharisees for wasting it. Of course, Jesus was able to see past it and love her through it. It's sort of midtempo and is a fun listen.
I Believe the Book- This features Bryan and talks about how, even though people nowadays brush the Bible aside and say it's too old and can't possibly apply anymore, it's still the most trustworthy source. It's still God's message to us and it's still true. Another standout.
The Greatest Wonder- Similar to That's What Makes Believers Believe, this song says that though creation is amazing, God is greater still than the most beautiful vista we can imagine. It's fast, fun, and features Scott.
Beggin' For Change- Might be a cover because the title sounds familiar. It's another uptempo one and features Matt. It's a play-on-words song, which I love, and tells the story of the man who was passed by Peter and John and wanted money but was healed instead. It features Matt, who is a very talented bass singer and has received several nominations for Favourite Bass.
Love Always Finds A Way- This one features Scott and recounts the story of the lame man whose friends lowered him through the roof because they wanted him to see Jesus. It's fast and definitely contemporary in style, which may be a drawback for some, but I think it's a standout track.
Middle Man- A creative song featuring Lee that tells of how Jesus can rescue us from the turmoil we face in life now and in the future. Again, listen fast, although that probably isn't as crucial as for track 1!
Not Just Another Day- A bouncy and fun song that features Scott and reminds us that any day can be special. In other words, be ready for God to move in your life because today could very well be the day!
Only Passing Through- This song is a good reminder for all of us because it's easy to forget that this life isn't all. The first verse features Matt, and Lee takes the second, making a nice contrast and finishing the CD on a great note (pardon the pun).
In sum, I highly recommend this great new release from one of Southern Gospel's top quartets. Though they have undergone some major changes in the past few months, they have not had to sacrifice the quality that fans love.
